Woman burned in cooking-related fire

MARYSVILLE, Washington (June 10, 2019) – Marysville firefighters treated a woman burned in a cooking-related fire Saturday morning. Cooking is the leading cause of home fires and fire injuries in the United States.

Firefighters responded to the call just after 10 a.m. Saturday in the 1900 block of 7th St. The woman in her 50s said she began heating oil in a pan on the stove and walked away briefly. She returned to find the pan on fire. While trying to extinguish the flames, the oil exploded, causing burns to her hands and face. A neighbor put out the fire before firefighters arrived. Firefighters transported the injured woman to Harborview Medical Center with not life threatening injuries.

Home fire sprinklers extinguished another recent cooking-related fire before the flames spread outside of the kitchen. The fire May 23 started inside a home in the 14000 block of 50th Dr NE as the occupant cooked dinner. Damage was contained to the cooking range, nearby cabinets and walls (photo attached). Smoke alarms alerted everyone inside and no one was hurt.

The Marysville Fire District reminds everyone:

  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking. It may be the single best thing you can do to help prevent cooking fires.

  • Smoke while cooking is a danger sign that oil is too hot. If you see smoke or the oil smells, turn off the burner immediately and carefully remove the pan.

  • Never throw water on a grease/oil fire. This can cause the hot grease to splash up and make the fire bigger. Instead, slide a lid over the pan and turn off the burner or get out of the house and call 911.
