Firefighters Transport 8 to Hospital After Deck Collapse

Firefighters transported eight people to a hospital August 4 after a deck collapsed at Camp Killoqua in Stanwood.

Initial calls to 911 just before 9 p.m. reported the victims were standing on the deck attached to a building when it collapsed. Firefighters arrived minutes later to find several people holding up the deck to rescue people still trapped underneath. Firefighters immediately began triaging patients and calling for additional resources. Access to the site was challenging, with only one road at the camp accessible to ambulances.

Marysville Fire District paramedics transported a woman in her 20s with a serious leg injury to Providence Regional Medical Center. Firefighters transported seven additional patients to the hospital, all in stable condition.

Approximately 25 people were on the deck when it collapsed, all believed to be camp staff members based on information provided to firefighters at the scene.

Due to the severity of this incident and the number of resources needed, firefighters coordinated to relocate ambulances from jurisdictions across the county to ensure availability of emergency medical services.

We are grateful for assistance with this incident from our partners at Snohomish County Fire District 22 (Getchell), District 19 (Silvana), District 21, Tulalip Bay Fire Department, North County Fire & EMS, Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office and Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office.
