Man Burned in House Fire Started by Candle

(February 16, 2023) Marysville Fire District Paramedics rushed one man to the hospital Thursday after he suffered burns in a house fire started by a candle.

Firefighters responded to the fire at a home north of Jennings Park just after 5:30 a.m. and found heavy black smoke pouring from the roof. Three adults escaped from inside the home. One of them, a man in his 30s, had second-degree burns to his hands and suffered smoke inhalation. Paramedics transported him to Providence Regional Medical Center. No one else was injured.

While firefighters prevented flames from spreading throughout the home, the residence sustained significant smoke and water damage. Total damage is estimated at $200,000. American Red Cross volunteers are assisting the three displaced residents.

An investigation found this fire started with a candle in a bedroom. We encourage everyone to consider flameless candles. If you do burn candles:

  • Avoid using them in your bedroom or areas where people may fall asleep.
  • Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn.
  • Blow out candles when you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Avoid spraying flammable aerosols near candles.

Marysville Fire District thanks North County Fire & EMS and Everett Fire for providing mutual aid in this incident.
